Concrete Canvas® GCCM’s Installed for Roadside Slope Protection

3000
CC installed for roadside slope protection
12 Days
full installation completed by a 13-person team
3 Months
time saved compared to conventional concrete methods

Solution

Shotcrete was considered but required road closure, risked rebound, needed specialist labour and heavy plant and was more costly and time-consuming.

Concrete Canvas® (CC) GCCM was found to be the ideal and chosen solution due to its rapid installation rates, ease of use and cost savings in comparison to more traditional methods. Additionally, CC allowed for a much cleaner install, with none of the issues associated with the rebound from shotcrete. The works were carried out by an installer on behalf of the Ministry of Transport.

CC flexibility allows for close contact to slope face

Design & Installation

  • CC5, CC8 & CC13 Bulk Rolls specified for performance comparison
  • Slope cleared of rocks and vegetation
  • Geotextile placed to protect CC backing
  • Vertical layup
  • Perimeter edges secured in anchor trenches or connected to infrastructure using clamping bar and anchors
  • Screwed overlap joints
  • Hydrated using water tank and hose
  • Once cured CC was painted to blend with surroundings

Summary

The installation was carried out in a total of 12 days, with the installation team working an average of 10 hours per day. Over 3,000m² of CC material was installed in dry conditions and moderate temperatures. The project was a great success in terms of both time savings and installation ease. If the same project had been carried out using conventional concrete, the team estimate it would have taken in excess of 3 months to complete.
