Membrane Protection | A1 Highway, Austria
3,016m² of CCX-M® Installed for HDPE Pond Protection
Project Overview
In July 2024, 3,016m2 of Concrete Canvas Ltd’s CCX-MAT® (CCX-M®) GCCM was used to provide membrane protection to a HDPE lined attenuation pond located next to the A1 highway in Wolfsbach, Austria.
Along the A1 Highway there are a number of water protection systems that controlled water run-off and vehicle pollutants via attenuation ponds. Alongside collecting water run-off, the attenuation ponds are also used to capture major spillages such as oil, diesel and chemicals, whilst also providing water to extinguish vehicles during major accidents.
Solution
To prevent run-off and pollutants from seeping into the surrounding area, the new pond was designed to be lined with a HDPE liner. The HPDE liner was to be protected using a non-woven geotextile and then covered with a 10cm layer of concrete. When comparing the original solution to CCX-M®, the client quickly saw how cost-effective and rapid the GCCM material could be installed, whilst causing minimum disturbance to the adjacent highway – eliminating the need for lane possession.
Design & Installation
- HDPE geomembrane was installed first
- Slopes were covered with a non-woven geotextile
- CCX-M® Bulk Rolls were specified
- Vertical layup
- Overlaps were thermally bonded using a Leister Unidrive 500Geo
- Steel pegs used to secure material within anchor trenches at the crest
- Hydrated using a water tank and pump
- Material was re-hydrated to avoid premature curing during hot weather conditions
- The base of the pond was covered with poured concrete, capturing the CCX-M®
- Floor was then covered in a layer of soil to encourage vegetation growth
Summary
The entire installation was completed within 5 days, with a team of 5 installing just over 3,000m2 of CCX-M®. The client was extremely satisfied with the solution, with CCX-M® saving around 40% of costs compared to standard concrete and are looking to use the material to line further attenuation projects.
