Yes. Concrete Canvas Ltd can supply small and large sample packs on request, which contain hardened swatches and unset A4 samples. Due to the volume of requests for sample packs, a
postage fee will apply.

The performance values of CC will start to decline once opened; the CC should, therefore, be used within a few days of opening to prevent any significant degradation. It is best practise to reseal any packaging after opening to extend this period as much as possible.

Concrete Canvas® GCCM has nominal dry weights of 8kg/m², 12kg/m² and 19kg/m² for CCT1®, CCT2® and CCT3® respectively.

Concrete Canvas® is manufactured is three types; CCT1®, CCT2® and CCT3® and CC Hydro is manufactured in two types; CCHT1 and CCHT2. The types are used for different applications in accordance to ASTM D8364 – Standard Specification for GCCM Materials and different types may be required to suit site specific loading and erosion conditions.

It is recommended to begin at the downstream end of the culvert and work upstream.

If the designer confirms the corrugations are to be filled, this is typically carried out before installing the CC, by using a suitable rapid set, non-shrink grout.

Filling the corrugations ensures the material is properly supported, providing optimum durability and resistance to dynamic loading.

Anchor trench dimensions must be a minimum of 150mm x 150mm but may need to be increased to suit the designer’s requirements.

If the CC will be terminated in anchor trenches outside the culvert, excavate the leading and trailing edge anchor trenches into the soil at the inlet and outlet.

Large bolts or protrusions that may cause the CC to snag should be smoothed out using suitable concrete or grout.

Damage to the culvert (e.g. voids or pitting created by rust or corrosion) must be filled with concrete, grout or compacted gravel depending on the designer requirements.

Divert water (if lining an existing culvert). Remove vegetation, soil, gravel and any debris from pervious linings (such as loose bitumen coatings) to expose the corrugations in the culvert.

Concrete Canvas® (CC) is the original Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mat (GCCM) and the first product to declare conformance to ASTM D8364 ‘Standard Specification for GCCMs’. It is a flexible, concrete filled geotextile that hardens on hydration to form a thin, durable and waterproof concrete layer.

Spray the fibre surface multiple times until the CC is fully saturated.

Screwdriver, stainless steel screws and suitable sealant with applicator gun, or alternative approved method to join the CC layers.

Remove packaging (making sure to note the Roll ID) and unroll CC across the coverage area to suit the specified layup (longitudinal or transverse layup as specified on the design drawings), ensuring the fibrous top surface faces upwards, with the PVC membrane in contact with the ground.

CC must be placed to ensure direct contact with the surface to prevent void space.

If the perimeter edge of the CC is terminating in a soil substrate (i.e. it is not going to be connected to existing infrastructure), excavate perimeter anchor trenches/benches to capture all CC edges.

Apply herbicidal treatment (if specified by the project engineer).

  • Remove all vegetation and grade surface to a uniform profile to suit the design dimensions.
  • Remove sharp or protruding rocks >25mm and fill large voids >50mm.
  • Sufficient CC to complete the project including allowance for edge fixings and overlaps

CC is a flexible, concrete filled geotextile that hardens on hydration to form a thin, durable and waterproof concrete layer. Essentially, it can be described as Concrete on a Roll® and is used for a wide variety of applications including the rapid lining of drainage channels, providing slope protection, weed suppression, culvert repair and general concrete remediation.

Consult the construction drawings to verify if special substrate preparation measures such as minimum bearing capacity requirements, installation of a non-woven geotextile, or if substrate drainage details are needed.

Spray the fibre surface multiple times until the CC is fully saturated.

Drill driver and through bolts, concrete screw anchors or alternative approved method to join the CC layers.

Dispense CC from bottom of roll.

Anchor trench dimensions must be a minimum of 150mm x 150mm but may need to be increased to suit designer’s requirements.

If the perimeter edge of the CC is terminating in a soil substrate (i.e. it is not going to be connected to the concrete structure), excavate anchor trenches along the perimeter of the structure (Leading and Trailing edges, crest/side slopes).

Any loose soil, rocks, concrete debris and vegetation should be removed.

Failing concrete must be cleaned and mortar applied to larger cracks (typically anything larger than 50mm in any direction) to eliminate voids under the CC. A suitable geotextile may also be used.

Concrete Canvas® (CC) is the original Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mat (GCCM) and the first product to declare conformance to ASTM D8364 ‘Standard Specification for GCCMs’. It is a flexible, concrete filled geotextile that hardens on hydration to form a thin, durable and waterproof concrete layer. Essentially, it can be described as Concrete on a Roll® and is used for a wide variety of applications including the lining of secondary containment bunds to provide erosion control, weed suppression, protecting against animal damage and reducing maintenance.

Spray the fibre surface multiple times until the CC is fully saturated. The wet CC will first darken and then become lighter as it absorbs the water.

CC can be cut using basic hand tools such as utility knives. Power tools such as disc cutters can also be used but will generate significant dust.

For end terminations of slopes, anchor trench shall be a minimum of 200mm x 200mm.

Anchor trenches are typically constructed at the Toe and Crest of slopes to provide a mechanical fixing restraining CC in the longitudinal direction.

Clean of vegetation including de-rooting and removal of sharp objects such as large stones and rocks >25mm. Grade to a uniform profile with all voids filled.

It should be noted that CC replaces conventional concrete for erosion control applications. CC shall not be used to provide a stabilisation/ retention function.

Note that CC will provide surface protection from external erosive forces such as from wind and rainfall.

CC is a flexible, concrete filled geotextile that hardens on hydration to form a thin, durable and waterproof concrete layer. Essentially, it can be described as Concrete on a Roll® and is used for a wide variety of applications including the rapid lining of slopes to provide surface erosion protection and weed suppression.

To check proper hydration, the CC should feel wet to the touch several minutes after hydration. Press your thumb into the CC and release. If water is present in the depression in the CC, it has been sufficiently hydrated. If no water is observed, then more water must be applied.

Spray the fibre surface multiple times until the CC is fully saturated. The wet CC will first darken and then become lighter as it absorbs the water. Do not spray high pressure water directly onto the CC as this may wash a channel in the material.

Fold back top layer and hydrate the material under the overlapped sections of the CC. Apply a suitable sealant as an 8mm diameter continuous bead along the line of where the screws will be positioned. Fold the top layer back into position and insert stainless steel screws at 50mm centres, 30–50mm from the edge of the top layer so that the screw is inserted through the sealant bead.

Unroll CC on the channel profile to suit specified layup, ensuring the fibrous top surface faces upwards, with the PVC membrane in contact with the ground. This is achieved by dispensing the roll by naturally unrolling along the ground rather than pulling material from the top.

Yes. Concrete Canvas® has been tested for root penetration resistance under DD CEN/TS 14416:2005 and has proven effectiveness in suppressing invasive species like knotweed.

In UK climates, Concrete Canvas® has a minimum design life of 50 years for weed control and is BBA certified with a durability of over 120 years when used for erosion control applications.

Concrete Canvas® is a Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mat (GCCM) that, once hydrated, forms a durable, fibre-reinforced concrete layer. This waterproof barrier prevents weed and vegetation growth, even for species that are notoriously difficult to control.

CCX-M® typically replaces 100-150mm of poured, sprayed or precast concrete, resulting in typical material savings of 90%.This directly results in a reduction of the carbon footprint of construction works.

This is dependent on the application and the quality/ inclination of the substrate; as a guide, we recommend pegging in anchor trenches at 2m intervals and material overlaps (joints). In warm climate conditions, intermediate fixings are required at a maximum of 3m intervals on exposed CCX-M® surfaces. CCX-U® and CCX-M® have been independently tested to the performance properties listed in ASTM D8364 – Standard Specification for GCCM Materials. Both products meet the minimum requirements of a Type II GCCM. Please see Technical Note 1 for more information on ASTM D8364.

CC drainage channels require minimal maintenance. Once the Concrete Canvas is installed as a concrete channel lining, it provides long-term protection and effective weed suppression that’s guaranteed to last for more than 120 years – in erosion control applications.

Yes, Concrete Canvas requires minimal ground preparation before it is applied. The unique design and materials of Concrete Canvas make it highly flexible, allowing it to conform to and accommodate existing concrete channels.

Typically, a drain depth is around 700mm below the soil surface to allow water to move over the drains. However, Concrete Canvas can be used in any drainage ditch with a greater or smaller depth.

Previously, Concrete Canvas has been used to line a concrete drainage channel at the side of the M32 motorway in Bristol, where a new bridge was designed and built for bus-only traffic. Concrete Canvas was chosen as an application to line an existing concrete channel for its easy and rapid installation with minimal disruption to traffic and its ability to be applied in wet conditions. There are many reasons why Concrete Canvas is used as a concrete drainage ditch or channel on existing land and construction sites.

A concrete channel is a diversion channel or draining ditch that lets water flow in and out or convey clean water from one hillside to another.

Suitable for a range of infrastructures and sectors, Concrete Canvas offers effective and sustainable concrete channel drainage solutions for carrying surface water, increasing the protection of land development.

Concrete Canvas® can be demolished using standard construction demolition equipment and disposed of in the same manner as conventional concrete waste. The EWC code for Concrete Canvas® is 20 03 01.

Providing it is installed correctly, Concrete Canvas® requires no regular post-installation maintenance.

Concrete Canvas® should be installed with the fibrous surface exposed. The fibre reinforced concrete layer will protect the PVC backing from weathering and UV damage.

General PPE precautions should be taken; face masks, protective clothing and gloves should be worn when handling Concrete Canvas®. Concrete Canvas® does not contain measurable amounts of soluble chromium (VI) and is not classified as an irritant. Consult the CC & CCH (M)SDS document for more information.

Yes. When ordered in sufficient volumes, Concrete Canvas Ltd can accelerate or retard the setting times of Concrete Canvas® to accommodate different environmental conditions and applications.

The minimum ratio of water: Concrete Canvas® is 1:2 by weight. For Example, CC8 weighs 12kg/m² and a minimum of 6 litres/m² is required for hydration. Concrete Canvas® cannot be over hydrated so an excess of water is always recommended.

Concrete Canvas® can be hydrated using saline or non-saline water. The water does not need to be potable.

Yes. It will hydrate fully from immersion.

The Concrete Canvas® will not reach its full strength and the setting time may be delayed.

One of the key features of Concrete Canvas® is that the fixed internal volume and control during manufacture ensures void space is set within carefully prescribed bounds and subsequently limits the Water: Cement ratio achieved in the field. It is therefore not possible to over hydrate Concrete Canvas®; it will set underwater and can, therefore, be installed in adverse weather conditions.

Before hydrating, unset Concrete Canvas® can be cut using basic hand tools. It is recommended to use snap off disposable blades or handheld self-sharpening powered disc cutters. After CC has set, it can be cut using angle grinders, jigsaws with ceramic blades or good quality tile cutters.

Yes. Wherever possible it is advised to hydrate Concrete Canvas® at dusk to avoid the water used for hydration evaporating in warm environments. In very hot conditions, it is advised to re-hydrate the material at 1-hour intervals for the first 5 hours.

Yes. Warm water should be used for hydration and plastic sheeting should then be applied over the hydrated material until it has set. Consult the CC & CC Hydro – Hydration Guide for further instruction or contact Concrete Canvas Ltd directly. Generally, the same setting conditions that apply to conventional concrete pouring should be observed when installing Concrete Canvas®.

Yes. Once wet, Concrete Canvas® has a working time of approximately 1-2 hours in a UK climate.

We do not recommend Concrete Canvas® as a vehicle trackway in most circumstances. However, Concrete Canvas® can be used as hard armour capping of ground to prevent dust generation, erosion and wash-out of fines. The load-bearing capacity of the trackway should be based on the surface modulus (CBR) of the ground which should be sufficient to support the requisite traffic loading. The Concrete Canvas® should therefore only be used to provide surface erosion control rather than to increase the surface modulus of any given substrate. For this type of application, we would typically recommend 2 layers of CCT3 with an offset overlap and the 2 layers screwed together.  It is not recommended to install Concrete Canvas® in turning areas where axle loading can ruck the surface of the material.

Concrete Canvas® has excellent resistance to chemical attack, in particular sulphate attack, which means it is well suited for use in ground surfacing applications. The concrete we use is also much more resistant to chemical attack compared to ordinary Portland concrete. Concrete Canvas® has passed acid (ph1), alkaline (ph13) and hydrocarbon immersion tests to BS14414.

Concrete Canvas® has achieved Euroclass classification B-s1, d0 and has passed the American MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) fire testing for use in underground mining applications.

Concrete Canvas® uses a specialist high early strength cement with a limited alkaline reserve which is below the US Environmental Protection Agency limits. CC has been installed directly into live watercourses without the need for special environmental protection measures.

Yes. Concrete Canvas® has been approved for use by the EA, SEPA and Natural Resources Wales on several projects. Case studies for these can be found on our website’s Project’s Page. Project approval is granted on a case-by-case basis.

Concrete Canvas® typically replaces 100-150mm of poured, sprayed or precast concrete, resulting in typical material savings of 95%. This directly results in a reduction on the carbon footprint of construction works. A recent Life Cycle Assessment found that CC8 contains 45% of the embodied carbon when compared to a 150mm ST4 poured concrete channel before the transportation and installation carbon savings are also considered.

This is dependent on the application and the quality/ inclination of the substrate; as a guide, we recommend pegging in anchor trenches at 2m intervals and material overlaps (joints). In warm climate conditions, intermediate fixings are required at 3m intervals on exposed Concrete Canvas® surfaces. The level of waterproofing that materials provide is typically referred to in geotechnics using a measure of permeability called the k-value. CC has been tested to BS1377 and has an average k value of between 10-8 and 10-9 m/s, which is similar to clay; a range commonly referred to as being impervious.

The permeability of a Concrete Canvas® lined structure can be adjusted by selecting an appropriate method for joining the material. Please see the CC User Guide: Jointing and Fixing document for more information.

If the overall impermeability is critical for your application, we would recommend the use of our CC Hydro material, which incorporates a high-performance containment geomembrane that is thermally welded with testable joints for quality assured containment applications. Please see the CC Hydro Brochure for more information.

The three most common methods are a screwed overlap joint; a screwed and sealed overlap joint; or a thermally bonded overlap joint. Slope protection is where the body of the slope is inherently stable but the surface of the slope is prone to erosion caused by weathering, surface run-off and environmental degradation. Concrete Canvas® can be used for slope protection in this case.

Slope stabilisation is where the body of the slope is geotechnically unstable and is at risk of suffering from slip (where a mass of the slope collapses). In certain applications, Concrete Canvas® can be used for structural slope stabilisation by combining it with flexible structural facings. Yes, bespoke lengths between 25m and 50m can be supplied and may be subject to a batching surcharge. Bespoke lengths are made to order and lead times may be longer than 50m stock roll lengths.

Concrete Canvas® is supplied in standard widths of 1.0m for CCT1 and 1.1m for CCT2 and CCT3. Wide Rolls up to 3m (CCT1) and 3.3m (CCT2) can be manufactured to order. It is possible to produce narrower rolls but this would be subject to a minimum order quantity.

Yes, bespoke lengths can be supplied subject to a batching surcharge.

Concrete Canvas® is stocked and supplied in its natural colour (mottled grey) as standard. There are a number of options for colouring Concrete Canvas® including dying the surface fabric fibres or applying coloured surface treatments, such as painting the fibre surface of Concrete Canvas® with a good quality exterior masonry paint. The performance values of CCX will start to decline once opened, especially in humid environments. The CCX should, therefore, be used within a few days of opening to prevent any significant degradation. It is best practice to reseal after opening if delays in the installation are anticipated.

When stored in the manufacturer’s packaging in the correct conditions, CCX can be kept for up to 12 months from the manufacture date without significant degradation in performance. After the 12-month point, CCX will continue to function but may take longer to reach the values specified on the CCX Data Sheet below.

Although CCX® is the newest product that Concrete Canvas Ltd has developed, the material has been installed in over 50 countries covering all 6 developed continents. CCX® is available through our Sales Partner Network, which currently covers over 100 countries around the world.

Concrete Canvas® is currently used in over 100 countries around the world and exports make up over 80% of turnover. Outside of the UK, our biggest markets are Brazil, Japan, Russia, Australia, USA and India.

CCX-M® has a typical nominal dry weights of 14.5 to 15.5kg/m2.

CC Hydro GCCB has nominal dry weights of 9kg/m² and 13kg/m² for CCHT1 and CCHT2 respectively.

CCX-U® is supplied in Bulk Rolls 1.95m wide by 50m long, with an area of 97.5m2 per Bulk Roll. CCX-M® is supplied in Bulk Rolls 1.9m wide by 50m in length, with an area of 95m² per Bulk Roll. Bulk Rolls can be manoeuvred using a forklift fitted with a pole attachment.

Concrete Canvas® can be supplied as either palletised bulk rolls or man-portable batched rolls. CCT1 bulk rolls are 170m², CCT2 are 125m² and CCT3 are 80m². CCT1 batched rolls are 10m² and CCT2 are 5m². Due to its relative weight, CCT3 is not available in batched rolls as standard.

CC Hydro is available in standard bulk rolls only.

CC Hydro GCCB (CCH) is typically used to replace conventional liner systems for a wide range of containment applications. Typical examples include bund lining, lagoon lining, and tank lining and remediation. Our biggest markets for CCH are the Petrochemical and Oil & Gas sectors.

CC Hydro (CCH) is the world’s first all-in-one armoured impermeable liner, known as a Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Barrier. CC Hydro (CCH) combines the concrete filled geosynthetic technology of Concrete Canvas® with a highly impermeable, chemically resistant geomembrane liner. The liner incorporates a hi-visibility welding strip which allows joints to be thermally welded with a double-track or triple-track air channel for on-site testing.

CCX® is manufactured in our UK production plant using bespoke machinery designed by Concrete Canvas Ltd. The process uses a unique patented method of inserting a cementitious material between two geosynthetic layers and stitched together to form a GCCM. For some CCX® product variants (discussed below), a LLDPE backing is applied to the bottom geotextile.

CCX-M® is typically used to replace conventional concrete for erosion control, remediation and enhancement of impermeability to canals and bulk water infrastructure.

CCX-M® is slightly stiffer than Concrete Canvas®, making it more suitable for larger more uniform profiles. CCX-M® has different drape characteristics than Concrete Canvas®, making it less suitable for undulating surfaces.

CCX® is unrolled into position and secured in place. The material is then hydrated. There is a 30-minute working window before setting begins, and in 24 hours the material hardens to in-service performance specifications.

CCX® is part of a revolutionary new class of construction materials called Geosynthetic Cementitious Composite Mats (GCCMs). It is a flexible, concrete filled geosynthetic which hardens on hydration to form a thin, durable, waterproof and lower carbon alternative to conventional concrete.
